Program Details
What will my student do during our tutoring sessions?

Each student will be taught using the Barton Reading & Spelling System, influenced by the Orton-Gillingham approach. The program is multi-sensory, direct, structured, and sequential. It is an intense intervention for students who have difficulty reading, writing and spelling. Students will develop phonemic awareness and learn how to accurately decode words.

How often and where will I meet with the students?

Each student will receive a minimum of two, 50 minute sessions per week. The more often the student meets with the tutor, the quicker the reading gap will be closed. Both in person tutoring and remote learning are available.

I am an experienced classroom teacher, and for the last 18 years, I have worked as a reading literacy/dyslexia tutor. I am a certified Dyslexia Specialist in the Barton Reading & Spelling System and I am a member of the International Dyslexia Association.
Why I Became a Dyslexia Specialist
I became interested in working with students who struggle with reading and spelling when one of my daughters experienced difficulties learning to read in elementary school. She had trouble retrieving words and remembering simple sequences. To my dismay, she was not interested in reading (although she loved listening to stories) and spelling was an enormous challenge. Formalized testing revealed that she was dyslexic and it was recommended that she receive intensive tutoring in an Orton-Gillingham influenced reading program. Thankfully we discovered the Barton Reading and Spelling System, a systematic, multisensory approach to reading. Over time she became a strong, fluent reader. My daughter is now a college graduate and is working on her Master’s Degree. She is grateful for the intensive reading intervention that she received, as it literally changed her life.
